Knowing me, Knowing Ius

I’m Michael Foran, an academic and writer. This substack is an ongoing project of mine attempting to demystify the law and combat misinformation about it. Much of my writing has focused on explaining the law relating to sex and gender.

I write for Unherd, The Critic, The Times, The Telegraph, Holyrood, Scottish Legal News, and have been interviewed for BBC News, STV, The Spectator, Holyrood Sources, Anti-Social and more.

I’m a lecturer in Public Law at the University of Glasgow. I hold a PhD in law from the University of Cambridge, a MSc in Law and Anthropology from the LSE and an LLB from Trinity College Dublin.

My first book, “Equality Before the Law” (Hart 2023) is based on my doctoral thesis which won the Yorke Prize from Cambridge. My second book, “Sex, Gender Identity, and the Law” will be published with Cambridge University Press in 2025.
